Favorite Cozy Reads

I love to read. If I could sit all day in my comfy green armchair and read the hours away, I would. But alas, real life beckons (I mean, those thrift stores won't shop themselves...kidding) and my books and reading glasses must be put down while I do whatever it is I'm supposed to do :)

A few months back on my podcast, (the aptly titled) She's So Cozy, I talked about four books I really love. I mean, I really, really love these books and I may or may not have read each of them multiple times. So go on, click those links below and join the "This Book Is So Cozy, I'm Gonna Read It 12 More Times" Club. We meet every Monday afternoon when we're supposed to be watching our kids, or doing laundry, or paying attention in whatever meeting has been called at work (that, let's be real, could've been an email). C'mon. All the slightly-cool middle aged women are doing it. Okay, they're not, but check out these books anyway and tell me what you think. I promise you won't be sorry :)

As a play on the words by one of my favorite writers, Rod Serling, "Submitted for your cozy reading approval..."

1.) Cozy: The Art of Arranging Yourself in the World by Isabel Gillies. A book by any other name would not be fit to begin this list. This pretty little book lives up to its name in every way, down to the font and the cover art. Isabel puts into words exactly what I've been thinking and feeling all these years; the concept of cozy is so personal and can be found in the every day things. This book will give you a fresh perspective on coziness and, at least for me, will make you feel less weird about the things you find cozy (I'm looking at you Flair Pens, tortoise shell glasses, hot water bottles, elbow patches, PBS...). If finding cozy in the "off-beat" or "mundane" is wrong, then I don't wanna be right. This book will knock those cozy socks right off your feet.

2.) Keeping the House by Ellen Baker is a magnificent historical fiction novel. Set mainly in post-WWII Wisconsin, Keeping the House centers around Dolly, a new bride who becomes fascinated with a beautiful, but dilapidated house and the family that once occupied it. The house itself is so intriguing, I found myself literally having dreams about it. I relate to it. The house reminds me of myself (full of mystery, errs on the bigger side, folks tend to stay away from it, run-down in some ways, but if you squint you can see it was once glorious...I'm joking). But really, this book is so beautifully written I couldn't put it down.

3.) Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon made me laugh, made me cry, made me wish I lived in England. This novel is written from the perspective of Florence, an elderly resident of Cherry Tree, a "sheltered accommodation" (i.e. a retirement home....everything sounds so much cozier in Europe *sigh*). Three Things About Elsie spans decades of friendship, mystery, heartbreak; in short, life. It's so good. Heartbreakingly good.

4.) Nothing Much Happens by Kathryn Nicolai. Oh, Kathryn, I love you. You totally get me. Have you ever dreamt of living in a little village where you can walk everywhere; the library, the stationery shop, the museum, the spice shop, the lavender farm and where life is wonderful and cozy 24/7? Well, I have and Kathryn makes this fantasy world come alive with not only her book, Nothing Much Happens, but her podcast of the same name. Both are full of grown-up bedtime stories. And the best part? Nothing much happens. Clever, huh? Kathryn also has another podcast called Stories From the Village of Nothing Much, which is equally as wonderful. I often read Nothing Much Happens while cozied-down for the night, hot water bottle warming my feet, magnesium lotion copiously applied. One delightful little story in, and I'm out. Like.A.Light. A cozy, warm, pinkish-yellow hued light. See, even lightbulbs can be cozy :)

I hope you check out these books and I hope you find them as lovely and as cozy as I do. Let me know what your favorite cozy reads are below or email me at shesocozy@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from YOU🤍
